fictionfire: manuscript submission and payment advice

PLEASE CONTACT ME AT info@fictionfire.co.uk or ring 07827 455723 to let me know that you are intending to send work to me, or that you have sent it (if you emailed me between 25th July and 6th August 2011, please send your message again as emails were lost on the server). Also contact me to discuss how I can help you if you feel your requirements don't fit the payment packages listed. I can tailor these services to fit your own individual needs.

Before submitting your manuscript please check Fees and read fictionfire's writing support services Terms and Conditions. If you send work to me I will assume that you have accepted the Terms and Conditions.

Submission of manuscripts for editorial/critique service:

  1. Manuscripts should be presented as follows: double-spaced, paginated, printed on one side of the page only in 12 point Times New Roman, with good margins. Do not bind the pages. Make sure your contact details are on the title of your manuscript. The overall word-count should also be clearly stated. The title of the work should appear in the header zone of each page.
  2. Do not send your only copy! I will take good care of your script but cannot, of course, guarantee that it will not be lost or damaged. No responsibility for loss or damage will be taken by fictionfire.
  3. Send hard copy through the post. Include a stamped, addressed envelope or jiffy bag with correct postage for return of the marked-up manuscript to you. Do not send your work via email attachment. When your work arrives, I will acknowledge receipt by email. If you do not have email, you can include a stamped, addressed postcard with your manuscript, which I will send to you to acknowledge receipt.
  4. Include your payment (see below) and a covering note with your manuscript, stating which of the services you require (See Fees page). Briefly describe your aims/problems/current situation with the work and any particular queries or concerns you have.
  5. Ensure your name, address, phone number and email address are clearly stated on the manuscript.

Mentoring service:

If you are applying for the mentoring service, send your manuscript according to the guidelines in the Submission of manuscripts for the editorial/critique service above, points 1-3 and 5.

Include, with your fee for initial mentoring, a covering letter, describing your project, your background and experience as a writer, your aims and any problems you're having with your writing. Part of our email correspondence will be focussed on addressing practical and psychological or motivational issues you may be having as a writer.

You can send up to 10,000 words of your writing project in any one month, with no more than one submission per month, to give me time to read and comment on your work effectively. I will return the manuscript to you with my comments. Note: comments will be more generalised than on the close edit of the editorial service, although if you have regular problems with expression, grammar, spelling, punctuation or layout, I will draw your attention to it.

I will correspond with you by email with you about your work and its progress. If I feel it will be useful, I may also follow this up with one-to-one consultation for an additional fee.

How to Pay:

  1. Payment must be made in advance. If, after consulting the fees page, you are in any doubt about what you should pay, or you feel your requirements don't fit the packages available, contact me at info@fictionfire.co.uk to establish the cost.
  2. Payment should be made by cheque to L. Fergusson and crossed 'A/C Payee only'. Your manuscript and cheque should be sent to Lorna Fergusson, fictionfire, 110 Oxford Road, Old Marston, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OX3 0RD.
